An apprenticeship gives you hands on experience, a salary and the opportunity to gain qualifications while you work – even a degree.

At Children’s Corner each of our settings employs at least one apprentice who is in the team to learn. We aim to maintain one apprentice in each of our age-appropriate rooms. Apprentice

You must live in England, not be in full-time education and be at least 16 years old to start an apprenticeship. There is no upper age limit. You will be employed for at least 30 hours per week and for at least one year

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a proper job with training that pays you a salary. You will learn the job by doing it and you will be given time out during the week to work on gaining a nationally recognised qualification.

What qualification would I be working towards?

The relevant apprentice framework for our sector is the Children & Young People’s Workforce apprenticeship; within this framework there are two distinct levels.

The intermediate level apprenticeship offers training for roles such as:

  • early years worker or assistant
  • care worker or assistant
  • assistant youth support and community worker

The advanced level apprenticeship offers training for roles such as:

  • nursery worker or supervisor
  • nursery nurse or nursery teaching assistant

You can apply for an apprenticeship provided you are aged 16 or older, eligible to work in England and you are not already in full time education.

What is the duration of the apprenticeship?

12 months. After which you would be considered for a full-time role within the company.

What happens when I am qualified?

We may offer you a permanent job within one of our settings if we feel that you would be a great addition to our team. You would have a significant advantage in the fact that we had provided your training and workplace experience – so we will know exactly what you are capable of.

What hours would I work?

40 hours per week including time off for college attendance.

Where would I work?

We have 11 settings in Leeds which all have capacity for apprentices at particular times.

What are the benefits?
  • Competitive salary
  • Funded travel costs if you are commuting on public transport
  • Training and career development
  • 28 days paid holiday
Why chose an apprenticeship over college or university?

As an apprentice you will do most of your learning whilst working in the role you are training for, alongside seasoned professionals and whilst earning a salary. This is usually combined with an element of classroom based training from a local provider. You will complete your qualification with the advantage of experience, which will set you up with a head start into a career. There is also a likelihood that you will be offered a permanent position within the team at Children’s Corner Childcare.

What are we looking for in an apprentice?

It is essential that you have a passion for childcare and that you want to work with children. Willingness to cuddle and comfort a distressed child is an essential quality in our staff and required on a daily basis, in all of our nursery settings.

A great attitude is a must. We are only interested in those who can commit to our high standards, have a keen desire to learn and develop their skills – and who treat others with respect.

You need Maths and English language GCSE at grade C or above. In exceptional circumstances we may allow you to join our apprenticeship programme without these GCSEs. However, you will need to pass both subjects in order to qualify as a childcare practitioner and apply for a permanent position within our team.
